Topaz: My Birthstone

When I first learned about Topaz, it was through the birthstone chart and this was well before I got into jewelry design and learning about gems and minerals. Of course, when I found out about the different colors of Topaz, I was awed. My birthstone is Gold Topaz, which I am drawn to almost all gold colored gems such as Citrine and Heliodor (Omg gonna get some Heliodor one day it IS on my wish list!) but who knows?

So what exactly is Topaz?

Topaz, the pure (meaning no impurities) is colorless and transparent but mostly is tinted by the impurities that give it color such as wine color, gold, grey, reddish orange or blue and brown. It can also be white, pale green pink which is super rare, reddish-yellow or opaque to transparent.

Orange Topaz is the traditional November Birthstone and it's a precious Topaz. Imperial Topaz  is gold, pink, which again is rare, and and pinkish orange. Blue Topaz, is very rare and most jewelry stores that sell it sell the treated or lab grown Topaz. Mystic Topaz  is colorless topaz which has been artificially coated giving it the desired rainbow effect

The name Topaz originates from Sanskrit and means "fire"   According to the Egyptians, Ra, the Sun God, colored Topaz with his golden glow. Topaz is a very protective stone and helps protect against envy, disease, injury and negative/black magic. When set in gold, it is very efficient. It relieves depressions, anger fear, greed and fends off nightmares when placed under a pillow. Topaz opens closed hearts and protects the openhearted from too much pain
